 How to make Unagi sauce at home?

To make Unagi sauce at home you’ll need:

  • 1/2 cup soy sauce
  • 1/2 cup mirin (sweet rice wine)
  • 1/4 cup sugar

Instructions:

Mix ingredients together, and pour into a small pan. Put on low heat and simmer for a few minutes until sugar dissolves, while stirring with a wooden spoon. Once sugar is fully dissolved, let the sauce cool, and keep in fridge for use.

    I didn’t know eel sauce was so simple to make! I already have all the ingredients on hand. I’ll definitely give it a try. I think it will really bring my homemade sushi to the next level.

    I know of a friend that makes this Unagi sauce, she tried to explain to me how its been done but I could not get it so well. Reading about it here has really arouse my desire to learn. I’m going to try making it.

      yes it must be a wooden spoon if it is not wooden it will ruin the sauce and bring cursed Japanese ghosts to haunt you for the rest of eternity

      It should be stored in the refrigerator when not in use, if that’s what you mean.
